BIG QUESTION: WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE AS A SUFFRAGETTE?
Welcome to my website about the Suffragettes. The Suffragettes were women who fought for the rights to vote in federal elections. There were many brave women who stood up for themselves and were prepared to win the rights to vote. In fact, the Suffragettes started off relatively peacefully in a way that they started writing letters, holding meetings and drawing posters. It was only in 1905 that the organisation created a stir when Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney interrupted a political meeting in Manchester to ask two Liberal politicians (Winston Churchill and Sir Edward Grey) if they believed women should have the right to vote. Neither man replied. As a result, the two women got out a banner which had written on it "Votes for Women" and shouted at the two politicians to therefore answer their questions. Christabel and Annie were thrown out of the meeting and arrested for causing an obstruction and a technical assault on a police officer. The Suffragettes used many violent methods including smashing windows, bombing houses and chaining themselves to railings. Women believed that it was unfair that only men could vote,so they took matters into their own hands. The three women who started the Suffragettes were Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters Christabel Pankhurst and Sylvia Pankhurst in 1903.
